Martha Jane SLAYDEN 1823-1891

A biography

Martha Jane SLAYDEN was born on 15 Jan 1823 in Santa Fe, Maury County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Daniel Everett SLAYDEN and his first wife, Edna BOYD. Martha died on 17 Aug 1891 in Santa Fe, Maury County, Tennessee. Martha Jane SLAYDEN married William Henry Harrison FIELDS, son of John FIELDS and his first wife, name unknown, on 17 Jan 1843 in Maury County, Tennessee. Martha and William had 8 children: Sarah P. FIELDS, Lucretia J FIELDS, Margaret E FIELDS, Josephine S FIELDS, Melissa Louise FIELDS, Samuel J FIELDS, James Monroe FIELDS, and John C B FIELDS.

The SLAYDEN family is an early Virginia family, from at least 1704. Before the family removed to Tennessee, they resided in Pittsylvania County, Virginia where the will of Joseph SLAYDEN (the grandfather of Martha) was probated in 1819. Some researchers incorrectly cite Benjamin SLAYDEN and Polly PISTOLE as the parents of Martha Jane SLAYDEN. This connection is disproved by the will of Daniel Everett SLAYDEN, Maury County Courthouse, Columbia, Tennessee recorded 1842 , which cites the names of the children. Benjamin SLAYDEN was a brother to Daniel Everett SLAYDEN.
