T his large family descends from Hezekiah HARGRAVE who was born in Rowan County (later Burke County 1877), NC. He removed to several counties in Kentucky before settling in Indiana about 1813. He died in Warrick County, Indiana in 1827. He was a blacksmith and had served with the 10th regiment, North Carolina militia, during the War of Independence.

F our of his sons ( James E HARGRAVE, William M HARGRAVE, Eldred G HARGRAVE, and Hezekiah H HARGRAVE) founded the town of Sulphur Bluff (1842-1843), Hopkins County, Texas. The Hargrave clan later spread into the towns of Nelta and Birthright.
